While using the Visual editor, the Insert link dialogue box
is the option we use to insert a link to a website, another course unit, or a
file in a Text component.
Add a Link to a Website
1. Choose
the text you wish to be displayed as the link text.
2. Click on
the link icon included in the toolbar.
3. Doing so will open the Insert/Edit link dialog box, in which you can see the URL field. You must then enter the
URL of the destination site you wish to target your link to in this field.
4. By
clicking on the dropdown arrow, which can be seen beside the ‘Open Link
In…’ menu, you may determine the action taken once the link has been
clicked on, like whether or not the link opens in a new window. You must
choose New Window from the mentioned menu for the link to open in a new
window. Otherwise, continue with the default value selected.
5. Click on OK.
6. Save the
Text component.
7. To
confirm the link functions as desired, you must test the link within a
preview of the LMS. You can do so by selecting View Live Version or Preview; then clicking on the linked text. Lastly, check to see if
the correct website loads.
Add a Link to a Course Unit
If you wish to add a link to another unit within the content of
the course, you must primarily ensure the desired unit has been published.
1. Acquire the location ID of the target unit you would like to
address the link.
a. To
do so, open the unit you would like to link to in Studio, and then within the
pane on the right side of the page, navigate to Unit Location.
b. Copy
the available alphanumeric text in the Location ID field below the Unit
Location section.
2. Paste the ID you have just copied within your desired Text
component; this will define the link destination.
3. Choose the text you would like to act as the text link.
4. Within the toolbar, find and click on the link icon.
5. Once you click on the link icon, the Insert link dialogue
box opens. You must complete the link URL by setting the link’s path,
similar to the following example.
/jump_to_id/<location ID>
Please remember to enter the location ID you copied in the first
step and the brackets in place of <location ID> within the field. Also,
do not forget to enter the forward slashes in the URL path.
When entering the URL value, make sure you use
/jump_to_id/<location ID> rather than the unit URL displayed in the address
bar at the top of your browser page. This is to avoid breaking the link when exporting
and importing the link.
1. For the link to open in a new window once, you should choose New Window from the ‘Open Link in …’ dropdown menu. Otherwise, let the default value remain.
2. Click Insert.
3. Save the changes you have made to the Text component. Lastly, test
to see if the link functions as needed.
Add a Link to a File
Tip: To quickly copy URLs from file locations when adding links to
files, open both the Text component and the Files & Uploads page in
separate browser windows.
It is possible to add links to any of the course files that have
been uploaded. You can learn more about uploading files by looking at the
Adding Files to a Course.
If you wish to add images to your Text component, you should
follow the instructions of the Add an Image to a Text
Component rather than this method.
1. Find the desired file on the Files & Uploads page, and then
from within the Copy URLs column, select Studio.
To link to your chosen file, you should use the Studio URL and
not the Web URL. See Adding Files to Your Course for more information.
2. You must
select the text that will then be linked to your chosen file from within
the Text content.
3. Within
the toolbar, find and click on the link icon.
4. Once you
click on the link icon, the Insert link dialogue box opens. Within
the URL field, you must enter the file’s Studio URL to set
the path to the uploaded file you wish to link. Below you can see a sample
model of how it should be done.
Remember to include the file path within two forward slashes (/).
5. This
step is optional. You can use the ‘Open Link In…’ dropdown menu and
set the linked file to be opened in a new browser window by selecting New
Window from the menu. Or else leave the default value unchanged.
6. Click OK.
7. Save any
changes you have made to the Text component; hence test the link.
